With Not a Terrorist, Shepard Fairey delivers a powerful statement against fear-driven narratives and stigmatizing rhetoric. True to his bold and instantly recognizable visual language, the artist emphasizes a fundamental idea: our shared humanity.
As he explains:
"This ‘Not a Terrorist’ print is a reminder that despite pervasive fear-mongering, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab rhetoric we are all equally human and deserving of equal human rights. I’ve traveled across the world and found kind, creative, thoughtful people everywhere I’ve been, including the Middle East and Africa. People are people everywhere and anyone who says otherwise has an agenda to promote hate and divide that should be rejected. Travel is an eye and mind opener I’d highly recommend!"
Drawing from his travels across the Middle East and Africa, Fairey reflects a personal experience shaped by encounters, openness, and complexity, challenging simplified and fear-driven representations.
Produced using letterpress printing, a traditional technique valued for its subtle relief and tactile presence, this work stands out for its refined execution. The cream cotton paper with hand-deckled edges enhances its authenticity and editorial quality. Each print is hand-signed and numbered, and bears the official Obey Publishing embossed seal, ensuring its authenticity.
A socially engaged work, this now sold-out limited edition stands as a significant and accessible piece within Shepard Fairey’s practice, whose impact on the contemporary art and cultural landscape remains considerable.
