Description

Original color lithograph, signed and numbered "HC 21/25" by Sonia Delaunay, preserved in remarkable condition.

This rare work is part of a prestigious edition comprising 75 numbered prints and 25 artist’s proofs (HC). It is also included in the collection of the Centre Pompidou, donated by the artist in 1976. The museum dates its creation to circa 1968-1969, a pivotal period in Delaunay's career.

This lithograph pays homage to the poet and founder of the Dada movement, Tristan Tzara. It brilliantly embodies Sonia Delaunay's artistic approach, where primary forms and colors merge in a simultaneous pursuit of rhythm and visual harmony. Through this composition, the artist evokes the essence of poetry, where the interplay of rhymes and rhythms resonates with the subtle balance of her abstract forms.

Renowned for her precision and high standards in lithographic work, Sonia Delaunay ensured that the chromatic richness of this print was perfectly rendered. Her decision to donate a proof to the Centre Pompidou reflects the significance she attributed to this piece.

As a world-renowned artist and a key figure of abstraction, Sonia Delaunay continues to see her market value rise steadily.

Bio

Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) stands as an iconic figure of modern art, celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to orphism, an artistic movement focused on abstraction and vibrant color interplay. Born Sarah Stern in Gradjizhsk, Ukraine, Sonia was adopted by a wealthy uncle in Saint Petersburg, where she was introduced to the wonders of European art. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and La Palette workshop in Paris, Sonia quickly established her unique artistic identity.

Her life took a transformative turn when she met her future husband, Robert Delaunay. Together, they revolutionized artistic practices by developing a theory of color rooted in simultaneous contrasts, producing dynamic and energetic works that left a lasting mark on art history. Sonia’s creativity went far beyond painting: she transformed textile design, fashion, and applied arts, infusing everyday objects with her abstract language.

Sonia Delaunay made history in 1964 as the first woman to have a retrospective at the Louvre during her lifetime. Works like Prismes électriques and Rythme couleur celebrate the energy and movement of the modern era, masterfully exploring the interplay of light and matter.

Her creations transcend mere art objects. They embody a unique vision of modernity and harmony. Investing in a work by Sonia Delaunay means owning a piece of history—a celebration of the 20th century’s dynamism and timeless aesthetics.
