Description

Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), Scottish, circa 1970

Color lithograph on wove paper
Signed at the bottom right and numbered "23/75" at the bottom left
75.7 x 55.7 cm

This lithograph is a remarkable work that will seduce enthusiasts of Sonia Delaunay's universe.

It is distinguished by a dynamic composition where brightly colored flats are organized into rectangular and triangular geometric blocks. The structure, thought out with precision, rests on a grid that gives an impression of monumentality and balance. By exploring the work according to a vertical reading, we discover how the artist fragments the rectangles into a harmonious sequence of triangles. Sonia Delaunay enriches this composition by integrating touches of white and hatched patterns, bringing relief and refinement to the visual.

The bold combination of red, blue and green tones recalls the aesthetics of the Scottish tartan, revisited with modernity by Delaunay. This work fully reflects her artistic approach, combining abstraction and functionality, and illustrates her unique talent for making the plastic arts, fashion and decorative arts dialogue in a synthetic and innovative vision.

Bio

Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) stands as an iconic figure of modern art, celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to orphism, an artistic movement focused on abstraction and vibrant color interplay. Born Sarah Stern in Gradjizhsk, Ukraine, Sonia was adopted by a wealthy uncle in Saint Petersburg, where she was introduced to the wonders of European art. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and La Palette workshop in Paris, Sonia quickly established her unique artistic identity.

Her life took a transformative turn when she met her future husband, Robert Delaunay. Together, they revolutionized artistic practices by developing a theory of color rooted in simultaneous contrasts, producing dynamic and energetic works that left a lasting mark on art history. Sonia’s creativity went far beyond painting: she transformed textile design, fashion, and applied arts, infusing everyday objects with her abstract language.

Sonia Delaunay made history in 1964 as the first woman to have a retrospective at the Louvre during her lifetime. Works like Prismes électriques and Rythme couleur celebrate the energy and movement of the modern era, masterfully exploring the interplay of light and matter.

Her creations transcend mere art objects. They embody a unique vision of modernity and harmony. Investing in a work by Sonia Delaunay means owning a piece of history—a celebration of the 20th century’s dynamism and timeless aesthetics.
