Bio

Yayoi Kusama, born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, is a globally renowned contemporary artist whose work has profoundly shaped the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Known for her instantly recognizable aesthetic of polka dots, organic forms, and immersive installations, Kusama has captured the hearts of art enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Her creations, situated at the crossroads of conceptual art, pop art, and minimalism, reflect an obsessive pursuit of infinity, addressing universal themes such as life, death, memory and loss.

Born into a conservative family, Kusama began drawing at a young age, using art as an escape from a challenging childhood. In the late 1950s, she left Japan for New York, where she became part of the avant-garde art scene. She quickly gained recognition for her monumental and provocative works, particularly her immersive installations that use mirrors, lights, and repetitive patterns to transport viewers into a unique sensory experience. Her celebrated Infinity Mirror Rooms, visual and spiritual journeys in their own right, have become iconic symbols of her art.

Beyond her installations, Kusama has explored various mediums, including painting, sculpture, fashion, and literature. She is also known for her daring performances in the 1960s, combining nudity, body painting, and feminist statements that marked the history of performative art. Despite her success, Kusama has faced personal challenges, including psychological struggles that she has transformed into a creative force. Since the 1970s, she has lived and worked in Tokyo, voluntarily residing in a psychiatric hospital while continuing to produce captivating works in her studio.

Today, Yayoi Kusama is celebrated worldwide. Her works are showcased in prestigious institutions such as the MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. At the same time, she has established herself as a central figure in the art market, with her creations setting records at auction houses and attracting collectors seeking timeless pieces.

Investing in a Kusama piece means acquiring a work from a unique and poetic artistic universe that continues to inspire future generations.
