With "Inside Out – Times Square, Close Up, USA, 2013", JR captures one of the most emblematic actions from his participatory "Inside Out" project, launched after receiving the TED Prize in 2011. Conceived as a global artistic platform, the project invites thousands of people to display their portraits in public spaces, making individual and collective stories visible on a monumental scale.
This image originates from the intervention carried out in Times Square, New York, in 2013, where 5,916 photographic posters were installed throughout the city center. The work features a gigantic eye dominating the urban architecture, while a multitude of anonymous portraits covers the façades below. The composition plays with shifts in scale and the confrontation between the individual and the monumentality of the contemporary city.
Through this series, JR continues one of the central reflections of his work: using photography as a tool for participation, visibility, and social dialogue. The displayed faces become human presences reintroduced into urban environments often perceived as impersonal.
This lithographic edition stands out for the graphic strength of its black and white composition, the precision of its printing, and the richness of its textures. Printed on BFK Rives paper with deckled edges, it also reflects the craftsmanship of the Marinoni workshops, renowned for the excellence of their fine art printing.
An emblematic edition from the "Inside Out" project, sought after for the universal scope of its message as much as for the visual power of this intervention in Times Square.
