With "Ghosts of Ellis Island", JR and Art Spiegelman bring together their respective artistic worlds around a site deeply marked by memory and history: Ellis Island, the main gateway for immigration to the United States between 1892 and 1954.
Invited in 2014 to work within the abandoned spaces of the island, JR created a series of monumental photographic installations bringing back the silhouettes of former immigrants within the deserted buildings. For this edition, the artist combines his photographic work with the instantly recognizable drawings of Art Spiegelman, author of the acclaimed graphic novel "Maus", whose own family history is closely tied to the story of immigration in America.
The work creates a singular dialogue between photography, drawing, and collective memory. The Statue of Liberty emerging from the depths of the space acts as a symbolic apparition, suspended between hope, exile, and historical narrative. The composition blends documentary reality and graphic intervention with remarkable fluidity, in a spirit fully consistent with JR’s collaborative artistic practice.
This lithographic edition stands out for the richness of its textures, the precision of its printing, and the quality of its tonal variations. Printed on BFK Rives paper with deckled edges, it also reflects the craftsmanship of the Marinoni workshops, renowned for the excellence of their fine art printing.
An important edition within JR’s body of work, sought after both for the narrative strength of the project and for this rare collaboration with Art Spiegelman.
