With this work from the "Women Are Heroes" series, JR continues one of his most iconic and socially engaged projects. Created in the Morro da Providência favela in Rio de Janeiro in 2008, the intervention transforms the hillside architecture into a monumental open-air photographic composition, where the eyes of women cover the façades of the houses.
Through this project, JR pays tribute to women confronted with violence, conflict, and social inequality, while giving monumental visibility to those who often remain unseen. The eyes installed across the houses create a striking human presence, establishing a dialogue between portraiture, urban landscape, and collective memory.
The work perfectly reflects JR’s artistic approach: occupying public space, diverting architectural scale, and using photography as a tool for social and political connection. The tension between the chaotic density of the favela and the silent power of the gazes gives the image a particularly strong visual impact.
This lithographic edition stands out for the richness of its colors, the precision of its printing, and the quality of its materials. Printed on BFK Rives paper with deckled edges, it also highlights the craftsmanship of the Marinoni workshops, renowned for the excellence of their fine art printing.
An emblematic edition within JR’s body of work, sought after for the historical importance of the "Women Are Heroes" project as much as for the graphic and human strength of this intervention in Rio de Janeiro.
