JR revisits one of the most iconic images of the American Civil Rights Movement. The work is based on the famous photograph taken by Ernest Withers during the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike, the final major demonstration supported by Martin Luther King Jr. before his assassination.
Installed by JR on the façade of a building in Washington D.C. in 2012, this monumental intervention perfectly reflects the artist’s approach: using public space to create a dialogue between collective memory, photography, and social engagement. The contemporary figure crossing the scene creates a striking contrast between past and present, giving the image a particularly powerful contemporary resonance.
This lithographic edition stands out for the quality of its printing, the richness of its textures, and the material depth characteristic of the Marinoni workshops. The BFK Rives paper and deckled edges further enhance the physical presence of the work and its character as a fine art edition.
An emblematic edition within JR’s body of work, sought after for both its visual strength and the historical significance of its subject matter.
