Hebru Brantley, 3 The Hard Way (SE), 2020
Bronze sculpture
Edition of 50
Signed
Dimensions: 36 × 13 × 12 cm (14.2 × 5.1 × 4.7 in.)
With "3 The Hard Way (SE)", Hebru Brantley condenses the essence of his visual universe into a compact vertical form: iconic figures, immediately recognizable, drawn from a language shaped by comics, aviation, and American urban culture.
Three faces are stacked, like three variations of the same character. The gesture appears simple, yet it generates a strong visual tension. Repetition, rhythm, presence: the sculpture functions almost like a frozen narrative sequence, a still frame within a larger story.
The choice of bronze is deliberate. While Brantley often works on canvas or walls, here he anchors his figures in permanence and materiality.
Traditionally associated with classical sculpture, the medium is reappropriated to serve a contemporary visual language. This contrast creates an immediate shift: an object that feels both familiar in form and radically current in its expression.
The dark, glossy finish enhances this effect. Light moves across the surface, emphasizing volumes and sharpening the features, giving the work an almost totemic presence.
Within this edition of 50, each piece is part of a controlled distribution approach, characteristic of collaborations with Avant Arte.
Beyond the edition itself, the construction of the work questions the notion of series. Three nearly identical figures are stacked, forming a deliberate repetition of the motif. A way for Brantley to explore visual memory and the iconization of his characters.
