Bio

Helidon Xhixha is a contemporary Albanian sculptor born in 1970 in Durrës, Albania. He is best known for his mirror-polished stainless steel sculptures, often monumental in scale, in which light, reflections and the surrounding environment become integral parts of the artwork. His practice has become one of the most distinctive within international contemporary sculpture.

Born into a family of artists, Helidon Xhixha first trained in Albania before continuing his studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. In 1998, he also received a scholarship to study at Kingston University in London, where he experimented with different media and further developed his use of stainless steel. This material gradually became central to his artistic language.

The defining feature of Helidon Xhixha’s sculptures lies in the treatment of their surfaces. Bent, shaped, hammered and polished to achieve a mirror-like finish, the steel reflects light, architecture, landscape and the viewers themselves. As a result, the artwork is never entirely static: its appearance changes according to its location, lighting conditions and the movement of the observer. Xhixha thus conceives sculpture as a continuous interaction between matter, light and space.

The artist gained significant international recognition through several monumental installations. In 2015, he presented Iceberg during the 56th Venice Biennale: a monumental reflective sculpture installed on water and conceived as a meditation on climate change and the fragility of Venice.

In 2016, his installation Bliss, presented in the courtyard of Somerset House during the London Design Biennale, received the Public Medal Award. The following year, his works were exhibited in the Boboli Gardens and at the Uffizi Galleries in Florence as part of the exhibition In Random Order.

Helidon Xhixha has since developed numerous monumental sculpture and public art projects across Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Asia. His major exhibitions include Riflessi di Luce in Lugano in 2019, Reflexes in Tuscany in 2021, and XHIXHA. La Reggia allo specchio, presented at Palazzo Reale in Milan in 2023. In 2024, he also participated in the Wuhan Biennale.

His activity remains particularly dynamic. In 2025, he created the monumental project Giubileo di Luce at the Abbey of San Galgano, while in 2026 several solo exhibitions were dedicated to his work, notably in Rome, on Lake Maggiore and at the Guangdong Museum of Art in China.

Through his stainless steel sculptures, Helidon Xhixha transforms an industrial material into a shifting, almost immaterial surface. His works explore perception as well as the relationship between sculpture and its environment, making light and reflection artistic materials in their own right.
