Ludovic Thiriez, A Crown for the King (2025)
Mixed media on canvas — 100 × 70 cm
In A Crown for the King, Ludovic Thiriez unfolds a figurative painting built in layers, true to his way of "organizing his compositions like a cake, made of several layers": images, sensations, memories, and motifs stack upon one another to give rise to a scene that belongs as much to storytelling as to dream.
The canvas depicts a suspended moment by the water’s edge: two figures seen from behind, close to the viewer, appear absorbed in quiet contemplation, while a third, more distant figure floats on the surface. The space is neither entirely identifiable nor completely unreal. An incandescent pink sky, shifting aquatic planes, and a sense of time standing still immediately create an atmosphere that feels outside the world.
On the right, a pink flamingo—an unexpected, almost totemic presence—tips the scene toward fairy tale and surrealism. Nature frames and permeates the image (foliage in the foreground, a dark horizon), recalling the central role of vegetation and animal imagery in Thiriez’s universe.
