Bio

Dorothy Napangardi is one of the major artists of contemporary Aboriginal art. She was born in Australia in 1956 in the Mina Mina region of the Tamani Desert. She passed away in 2013. In her painting, the artist refers to ancestral territories, her favorite subject being the Dreaming of the Women's Digging Stick.

The Australian painter was central to Warlpili religious and cultural life, spending her time between Alice Springs, Cammooweal, Nyiirpi and Yuendumu. During the 1990s, Dorothy Napangardi decided to transform the aesthetic richness of the Warlpiri to reinterpret it according to her dreams, resulting in absolutely unique abstract works. Her conception and her reading of the typical motifs is also quite personal, she distinguishes herself from other aboriginal artists especially on these aspects.

In 1998, Dorothy won the Northern Territory Art Award which gave her an important place on the art scene of her native country. In her creations, the artist strives to show us that despite a simple technique consisting of repetitions of small dots applied with a stick, the final result is always attractive and unique. His pictorial compositions are rhythmic and meticulously painted, his paintings captivate the viewer. Art Shortlist is proud to present this artist who has her place among the greatest creators of Aboriginal art.
