Bio

Tomás Sánchez is a Cuban painter and printmaker born on May 22, 1948, in Aguada de Pasajeros, in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Considered one of the major figures of contemporary Latin American painting, he is particularly renowned for his monumental landscapes imbued with spirituality and silence, combining meticulous realism with an almost mystical atmosphere.

Education and early career

Drawn to drawing and nature from an early age, Tomás Sánchez moved to Havana at the age of 16 to study painting at the prestigious San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts. He later continued his studies at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA), graduating in 1971.

That same year, he received the First Prize for Drawing at the National Salon of Young Artists, a distinction that marked the beginning of his recognition within the Cuban art scene. After completing his studies, he taught printmaking at the ENA and became actively involved in the artistic life of Havana.

A body of work between landscape and meditation

Tomás Sánchez’s work is primarily devoted to landscape painting, which he transforms into a contemplative and almost metaphysical experience. His paintings often depict tropical forests, silent lakes, infinite horizons, or isolated islands, sometimes punctuated by the tiny presence of a human figure in meditation.

These highly detailed landscapes, executed with remarkable technical mastery, combine realism, symbolism, and a strong spiritual dimension. The artist’s personal practice of meditation plays a central role in his life and deeply influences both his vision of nature and the introspective character of his work.

International recognition

Tomás Sánchez’s international career gained momentum in the early 1980s when he received the Joan Miró International Drawing Prize in 1980, a major distinction that brought his work to the attention of institutions and collectors.

Since then, his work has been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions around the world, particularly in Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Today, his landscapes are held in important public and private collections, and he is often considered one of the most valuable living Cuban painters on the art market.

Life and artistic practice

After leaving Cuba in the late 1980s, Tomás Sánchez lived in Mexico and later in Florida, before eventually dividing his time between Miami and Costa Rica, where he continues his artistic practice.

Through his silent and contemplative landscapes, the artist continues to explore the relationship between human beings, nature, and spirituality, creating a distinctive body of work that places meditation and the beauty of the natural world at the heart of contemporary painting.
