Marble Sculpture
Marble is rightly considered a noble material. This material has been used at least since antiquity to create furniture and sculptures. The solidity of marble makes it a material that can stand the test of time. Since Phidias and Myron, this metamorphic rock derived from limestone has been used to represent figures and bodies in a very realistic way. Marble has also been used for bas-reliefs.
During the Renaissance, marble was highly valued by sculptors who found inspiration in ancient classical sculpture. An artist like Michelangelo, for example, created his David in marble. The Italian genius considered it necessary to free the human form that was trapped inside a block of marble. Today, Jago continues to give its letters of nobility to this emblematic material of classical sculpture.
Marble has a slight transparency and a fineness that gives a transluminescence and realism comparable to human skin. Marble is a rather soft material which makes it easier to carve and polish than other more rigid materials. Over time, marble hardens, making it even stronger. Moreover, this material can withstand outdoor life and is weather resistant, however, it can easily turn yellow, so it is advisable to prefer the interior for its good preservation.
There are many tools to work marble, here are the main ones: Gli Scalpelli (chisels): there are several kinds; the Subbia (a point), the Unghietto (a round chisel), the Gradina (a notched chisel), Lo Scalpello (a straight chisel). La Mazza (the mallet): this object is used to strike a chisel. Lo Scapezzatire: this large chisel is a sharp tool for splitting stone and roughening stone. Il Flessibile: this angle grinder is equipped with a diamond blade. Il Martello Pneumatico: a pneumatic hammer.
In addition to the above tools, marble carvers use dabbers and sharp tools to strike the stone directly. They may also use scrapers, rasps, abrasive stones and sandpaper. Finally, carvers usually apply a fine abrasive powder of tin oxide for a smooth, shiny finish.
