Piotr Konchalovsky was born on 21 February 1876 in Sloviansk, a small village, nowadays located in Ukraine. His family moved to Moscow in 1889, his father was an art publisher. His publishing house was very important for the development of the Moscow art scene in the 1890s. His father worked with such people as Mikhail Vrubel, Vasily Surikov and Valentin Serov.

Piotr Konchalovsky trained at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He then went to Paris to study at the Julian Academy between 1896 and 1898. In 1910 he founded the Valet de Carreau movement together with Vladimir Boberman, one of his disciples. This Moscow pictorial movement took up the reflections of Paul Cézanne and French Post-Impressionism, but also movements such as Fauvism and the German expressionism of the "Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider). The Valet de Carreau is considered to be the flagship movement of the Russian avant-garde.

In 1922 he had his first solo exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery, one of the most important museums in Moscow. He also travelled regularly to Paris and France. After 1925, he mainly drew still lifes and landscapes. His works are largely influenced by Paul Cézanne.
